Soest: Eemland Village Between Amersfoort and the Gooi
Soest has about 45,000 inhabitants and lies in the province of Utrecht between Amersfoort and Baarn. The municipality includes Soestdijk, where Paleis Soestdijk served as the residence of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard from 1937 until Juliana's death in 2004. The palace grounds, flanked by long avenues of trees, are visible from the main road but the estate's future use has been debated for years.
The landscape transitions here from the low Eemland polders in the west to the higher, wooded Utrechtse Heuvelrug in the east. Soesterberg, a village within the municipality, hosted a military airfield from 1911 to 2008 that served both the Dutch and, during the Cold War, the American air force. Part of the former base has been converted into the Nationaal Militair Museum.
Amersfoort is roughly 8 kilometres north. Hilversum lies about 15 kilometres west. Baarn borders to the south.
