Vianen: Former Free Lordship on the Lek River
Vianen has about 19,931 residents and lies on the south bank of the Lek river, within the gemeente Vijfheerenlanden since 2019. The town has an unusual history as a vrije heerlijkheid, a free lordship independent from Holland and Utrecht for centuries. This status made Vianen a refuge for debtors and dissenters who could escape the jurisdiction of surrounding provinces. The Grote Kerk and remnants of the Batestein castle moat recall this independent past.
The compact old centre retains its historical street plan. The Lekbrug connects Vianen to Nieuwegein and the Utrecht agglomeration across the river. The A2 and A27 motorways intersect nearby, making the town a commuter location for Utrecht and the Randstad. The Lek river floodplain to the north provides open landscape views. The Zederik polder to the south transitions into the Alblasserwaard.
Utrecht is about 15 kilometres north. Gorinchem lies roughly 25 kilometres southeast. Nieuwegein is directly across the Lek.
