Goes: Market Town on the Former Island of Zuid-Beveland
Goes counts about 36,900 inhabitants and serves as the main town of the Zuid-Beveland peninsula in Zeeland. Before the Delta Works connected the islands with dams and bridges, Zuid-Beveland was a separate island in the Oosterschelde. The Grote Markt, surrounded by historic facades, hosts a Saturday market. The Grote Kerk, also known as the Maria Magdalenakerk, is a Gothic church with an organ that attracts recital visitors.
Fruit growing, particularly apples and pears, has historically been important in the surrounding polders. The Goes-Borsele heritage steam railway operates a tourist service between Goes and the village of Hoedekenskerke during summer months. The town expanded significantly with post-war residential areas but the centre preserved its compact historical core.
Middelburg is approximately 20 kilometres west. Bergen op Zoom lies about 30 kilometres east across the Oosterschelde. The Zeelandbrug, one of the longest bridges in the Netherlands at 5 kilometres, connects the former island to Schouwen-Duiveland to the north.
