Kapelle: Fruit Village in the Zeeland Clay
Plum, apple, and pear orchards occupy much of the polder land around Kapelle. This Zeeland village of about 8,670 residents lies on the Beveland peninsula, between Goes and Kruiningen, in a flat clay landscape shaped by centuries of embankment and drainage. The A58 motorway and the rail line from Vlissingen to Bergen op Zoom both pass through the gemeente, giving Kapelle better transport links than its size might suggest. The Westerschelde tunnel, connecting South Beveland to Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, is about 15 kilometres southeast. The Oosterschelde estuary, part of the Delta Works system and now a national park, lies north across the peninsula.
Kapelle's centre is modest: a church, a primary school, and a strip of shops along the Biezelingsebaan.
