Terneuzen: Canal Port and Chemical Cluster in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen
Terneuzen has roughly 27,930 residents and lies in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, the strip of Zeeland south of the Westerschelde. The Kanaal van Gent naar Terneuzen connects the Belgian city of Ghent to the North Sea here, making Terneuzen's locks a critical bottleneck for inland shipping. A new, larger lock is under construction to accommodate bigger vessels. The Dow Chemical plant on the canal side is one of the largest chemical production sites in the Netherlands.
Zeeuws-Vlaanderen is geographically isolated from the rest of the Netherlands, connected only by the Westerscheldetunnel to the north and the Belgian road network to the south. Belgian influence is noticeable in dialect, shopping habits, and daily life. The surrounding polders are flat agricultural land reclaimed over centuries.
Ghent is about 30 kilometres south via the canal. Middelburg is roughly 30 kilometres north through the tunnel. The Belgian border is approximately 10 kilometres west.
